Some years ago I visited Morocco and stayed with some family. It was a fascinating place indeed, with its mixture of mosques and crimson Moorish palaces overlooked by snow-capped mountains. I was intrigued by the brash colour of bazaar spices, the lilting call of the muezzin, the scent of mint tea and the zellige tilework made from individually chiselled geometric tiles.
I kept travelling, visiting Jordan, Malaysia, Turkey, Tunisia and Indonesia. Upon looking at mosques, madrasas, palaces, courtyards and gardens, one cannot but feel a sense of awe.
I had to have a piece of that beauty on my home walls!
That’s why I founded Moorish to share the divine beauty of Islamic art with you.
Art is the mirror of a culture, and the art of the Islamic world reflects its cultural values and reveals the way Muslims view the spiritual realm and the universe.
Islamic art isn’t restricted to North Africa, Andalusia or specific religious work – but includes all the artistic traditions in Muslim culture. Its aesthetic appeal exceeds time and space, as well as differences in language and culture.
From the Dome of the Rock, the Taj Mahal, the Kaaba to the beauty of Moorish palaces and madrasas with walls and ceilings covered with exquisitely carved Arabic calligraphy and extremely rich ceramics and plasterwork.
I hope my art can get a vibe of Islamic culture into your home and brighten up your walls!
